On becoming friends with your parents

I had great parents (still do!) growing up, in my non-parent eyes they had that whole parenting thing down pat. They were strict with rules and truly wanted me to become a responsible adult who is kind, loving and thoughtful (among other things.)

Another reason why they rocked was because they were my parents growing up-not my friend.

They didn't care if they were strict about bed times and other parents weren't and I told them so-and-so's parents let her do this. Good for her, they'd say. Going to bed at the same time everyday taught me time management. That you need a proper amount of sleep and don't have an unlimited time limit each day but that you schedule to fit everything in. Hello, that's me now. Planner.

They didn't care if I was "sick" and needed to stay home (let's be honest, I was good enough to go to school and just was being lazy)  because when we stayed home from school on the rare occasion, we were in bed all day. No resting while watching tv or doing errands with mom. In bed, resting. That's pretty boring and I know now why they made that rule up. Smart moves 'rents.

I know some of family members have told me in the past that they thought my parents had it all wrong---that that they needed to be more friend like with their children and less authoritarian with my brother and I.

Well, I'm glad my parents raised me in "we're the boss", "we said so" way and had rules and structure for us.

I realized this weekend as us 3 spent the weekend across the border shopping that I like hanging out with my parents. A whole day laughing and bonding like friends would and do. I find that pretty neat-to go from not friend like and now considering them my friends.

And I know if you asked them, it's a nice reward to.

Postin from the 'Bucks

This blog post is coming from the starbucks that is literally a minute away from my house. I actually feel like a "real blogger" now, blogging from the bucks.

I have a really big and important assignment due for one of my summer school courses and yesterday and brunch, my router decided to die. After 2 hours of re-booting my internet connection and using my home computer for research and typing up my assignment on my lap top on my lap..I gave up. Ain't no body got time for that.

So after my dad "fixed" it, which really wasn't fixed, I gave up and came to starbucks to finish the assignment today. I actually like working here. Usually I get distracted but today I motored through. Just submitted it!

I've noticed a few things while sitting at starbucks over the lunch hour.
-Girls from the highschool love dressing in big sweatshirts.
-And they flirt so much!
-These kids smoke so young. Their poor lungs.
-Most of the students didn't even buy drinks but used the chairs to gossip for an hour.
-Kids are annoying and I really hope I wasn't that annoying! Yikes.
~

On a happier note, my Grandpa Hannon went home today from the hospital and back to his nursing home to my Gramma. Please pray that he continues to get better and lives for a really long time.

Update and Thank You!

Before I give an update on my lovely Grandpa Hannon, I just wanted to say thank you for all the comments, tweets, text messages  and prayers I've received since Tuesday. It truly means the world to me. Thank you!

Grandpa is stable right now. Meaning, he's not getting better but not getting any worse. I went to visit him yesterday afternoon with Alex but he was sleeping (grandpa not Alex). We waited around for about 10 minutes but decided to leave without waking him. It's good that he's resting if his body needs that.

I told Alex I felt bad for leaving because he won't know we were there but I always feel waking him.
I wish I had more to update you on. I left for class before my parents woke up so I didn't get my morning update from them.

Please keep him and in your prayers. Poor man needs them so much. I don't know what God has planned for him but just pray for his will.

The month of June hates my family

I'm so glad that I have an outlet like blogging where I can write to express feelings at all times.
So thanks blogger.

As most of you know, my grandpa hannon has been in and out of the hospital for the past 3.5 months with chest and bladder infections. He'll get stronger and therefore get released from the hospital and a few weeks or even days, he's back in the hospital. It hurts to see him wasting away and it kills me to see my dad be strong and comfort his family when his own dad is so sick. That is the type of man he is.

Well, I got home from class today, made a healthy lunch when my mom called to say that Grandpa was on his way back to the hospital and the doctors aren't sure what else they can do for his infections. Needless to say I broke down.

I went to visit my grandpa before my night shift and he was so weak looking. I went up to the bed and said hello, asked how he was (always feel dumb doing that, because he's not doing well.) He didn't say anything but instead reached up to grab my hand. Totally started balling my eyes out. That gesture was so sincere to me.

My Grandpa is the best. Honestly, what this man has gone through in his life-from being paralyzed on his right side of body from fighting in WWII to never giving up when things didn't go right, is an example to me in my own struggles.

I'm asking for those who pray to lift up my Grandpa Hannon. Even some positive thoughts would mean so much.

Prayers for Grandpa, Grammy's, Dates.

  • If you follow me on twitter I've posted a few pictures from the hospital. My Grandpa Hannon is pretty sick right now and has been in the hospital for 9 days now. He has an upper respiratory bacterial infection, along with bladed infection, blood pressure is either really high or low. My Aunt from Alberta came in last week because we weren't sure if he was going to make it.
I went to see him yesterday and he is doing so much better. Still in pain and sleeps a lot but I actually talked with him, he asked me questions about my class this afternoon and I left with a big smile on my face.

Last week, he didn't know how I was (i.e Mike's daughter, my granddaughter) which made me sad. Please keep him in your prayers!

  • Alex is going away tomorrow for 14 days to Vancouver to visit his Dad and I'm not looking forward to it at all! We're going out for dinner and menchies to say "bye" and to celebrate 7 months together.
  • I loved the Grammy's last night. And I'm obsessed with The Band. Franny take a loooaaaddd offf.

Giving Thanks

This past weekend was my Thanksgiving...us Canadians, and it was lovely.

Lovely because I brought Alex to meet my family! Big steps people :) And of course seeing my cousins was great.

We changed things up a bit and instead of having Thanksgiving at my house, we went to my uncles farm in Napanee ON to have dinner with my mom's side of the family, for the weekend.

Monday, Alex and I headed up to Keswick for his familys dinner. His family? Is great. Love them.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going back to my turkey induced coma.

Bears vs Packer

This post could also be titled "A house divided"

Because my family are Packers fans and Alex loves the Bears. Like, thinks they are the best team ever.

You see, if you follow NFL football you know that tonights game is a big, intense game against the Bears and Packers.

AKA: rivials

Y'all should have been a fly on the wall to see my dads reaction when I bought a bears shirt from Old Navy. Basically told me to take it off.

And when I posted this picture on IG this week, the comment from my brother saying if I wore this shirt around him he wouldn't talk to me, just made me laugh.

So tonight, I'll be watching the game with my dad, me cheering for the bears while he roots for the packers.

All I have to say is...

BEARS, BEARS, BEARS!

Never thought I would write this post.

(writing this thursday, dinnertime)

If you read my post from yesterday, I'm sure you got a little taste that something isn't right with me. Or my family.

if that was your guess, then 100 points for you!

I am actually dreading writing this post but I need to write. I have so many feelings going thru my mind that I need to get out.  I know there are people who will read this and could maybe help.

I never thought I would write this post or say these words but it seems God has thrown the Hannon family a curve ball.

My mom, my beautiful 54 year old mother, has breast cancer.
that killed me to type that.

As I've been slowly texting and calling friends since yesterday it never gets easier to say "my mom has a horrible disease."

Where to begin?

Well, I guess the start. About a month a go my mom found a lump while getting dressed and after telling my dad/ my gramma, she called to make an appointment with our family doctor. She went in about three days later, he looked around and scheduled her for a biopsy for the next week. At this point, only my dad and gramma knew as my mom didn't want to make a fuss about something we don't know anything 100% about.  I only knew because I am the #1 eavesdropped out there and she didn't want me finding out from eavesdropping.

She told me two days before her biopsy that she was taking the day off work and why. I was calm, not freaking out because we weren't going to get upset when we didn't even know if the "thing" was cancerous or not.

My dad goes with her and they go in for surgery, take a little bit of the growth off for testing. To see what this actually is.

That was last tuesday (June 5th). She gets home within an hour, rests and goes back to work the next day.

Our doctor said he would call in two weeks with results.

And on wednesday, the doctors office called and asked if she could come in for the next day (thursday, yesterday.)

Wednesday was bad. She kept saying "I have a feeling..." in which I would tell her to stop and whatever it is, we'll deal with it when it comes.

Mom said she couldn't sleep last night and just knew in the bottom of her heart it was cancer.

So, yesterday my dad and mom go to the doctors for 9:30am and I head off to class for my final exam. I wanted to call around 10am during my exam to find out but to be honest, I too knew something was wrong.

I came home around 11:45am and she confirmed it. She has cancer.  We stood in the doorway for about 10 minutes just crying and hugging each other. There is something about this hallway that is always the spot for people to cry and hug.

Thursday afternoon was such a blur. The phones calls, the emails from my ex-boss, family stopping by.

The emotions I have experienced in a few short hours is overwhelming. I'm sad because this is happening, I'm angry and want to blame someone for doing this to my family, TO MY MOM! I've wanted to punch things. I've wanted to just lie down and sleep and wake up and go back to when we weren't the family whos mom has cancer.

Aside from those emotions, the love and support I have felt from my friends and family brings me to tears. Having friends say that they are here for me, to call them anytime means the world. Hearing that my uncle cried when my gramma told him warms my heart.

The amount of "i love yous" that have been said in 6 hours is amazing.

The next step is for my mom to meet with the surgeon next wednesday to go over what will be done during the surgery, if she'll stay overnight etc.

Then in late June she'll have the surgery to hopefully remove this ugly thing.

if you are the praying type, I ask, from the bottom of my heart for you to pray for my mom Sharon, my dad,  as this is killing him to see his wife of 30 years go thru this, myself and my brother Ryan. Love your faces!

Jack and Jill-March 24th 2012.

My brother and Danielle. That's D's brother in the background.

I'm finally sitting down after being on my feet since 2pm yesterday. No lie.

Yesterday was Ryan's (bro-ham) and Danielle's (future SIL) Jack and Jill shower. It's basically a night of drinking, games and raising money to give to the couple. It was so much work but so worth it.

It was the best night and pretty sure we raised a couple grand for them.

There were door prizes, raffles and a toonie toss to win a bottle of grey goose which I would have won but someone on D's side beat me. I do say, people were so shocked that I came in second!

There was a push up competition which If you ask me, Ryan totally won.

I loved the clean trash talking between the Toronoians and the Peterbroughians.

Us girls made t-shirts that said Team Donnelly and Team Hannon on them. I got one of each because even though I'm a bridesmaids, I'll always been Team Hannon.

Such a great night. So much fun!

Picture Fail

Remember back in the new year how I wrote that one of my goals for 2012 was to take more pictures? To be that annoying family member that has the camera out all the time? Well I fail at that this weekend.

You see, on Saturday my mom and I hosted a lovely bridal shower for my future SIL. And I didn't take a single picture. Not even a picture of the tulips that cost $37.54 to buy.

Not a single picture of me and Danielle.

Or one of my mom and her best friend that she's known since grade 6.

Or of the cheesy decorations.

When everyone left and the clean up started only then did I realize that I didn't take a picture.

In my defence, I was running around like a mad women taking coats, pouring wine for myself for the guests, introducing people to my SIL and explaining to others that no I'm not still 14 years old like I was the last time I saw you and yes, I am 10 days away from turing 20.

It was such a nice shower. So nice to catch up with those I haven't seen since I was 12 and so nice to shower my SIL with love and gifts.

So I promise. No, I pinky swear, for the Jack and Jill I will take loads of pictures.

Little joys.

Yesterday was a good day all around. So many things made me smile, so many things made me stop and remember to write down in my thankful book.

First, I went for an early 8.5k run at the gym. This was my farthest run all week and boy did my body need it.

Then, I found out my 2 hour class was cancelled so I only had a 50 minute class. Sweet!

And I had a great afternoon at Michael's shopping for supplies for my SIL's -to be bridal shower on March 10th.

But the thing that brought the biggest joy was one I have been praying about for months . It was the fact that my SIL and I had a long phone call last night.,

You see, in the almost 4 years since Danielle has been around, we've never been close. Some was partly my fault-being scared of her thinking I was annoying (me?annoying? NO WAY!) and some was my brother's fault, which I'm not reading to write about. I do think that the 10 years between us didn't help and the 2 hour distance wasn't helping either. I mean a 16 year old (when they started dating) and a 26 year like different things and it's hard to say to someone "let's go for a movie"- when you live 2 hours away.

Of course we talk at fam jam's, catch up and stuff.

But never alone.

We've never gone for coffee or drinks together or texted (she doesn't have a cell so that is out of the question.)

When Ryan and D got engaged I started praying a lot that God would help make our bond stronger. I noticed at Christmas time that our bond was getting stronger as all night we talked and talked and continued talking when we got back to my house that night.

But I wasn't expecting what happened last night.

D called to say my dress was in and 20 minutes later I realized we are still on the phone, chatting away. Talking about wedding plans, showers, my brother and school.

I always have dreamed of having a close bond with my SIL, getting nails done, calling each other often just to girl talk. Dreaming of our kids being really close. Dreaming of calling her up and telling her that I'm coming up for the day.

I think now that she is almost officially part of my family we are starting to become close.

Now my biggest prayer is that we continue to grow and become closer than ever!

~

Happy 21st birthday to my best friend Karen! Excuse me while we enjoy a day of pad Thai, pedicures and ice skating.

A letter to the celebs

Can we just talk about celebrities for a second?

I love being caught up in the world of celebs. I don't buy the magazines as spending $3.99 for a magazine that takes me 10 minutes, if that, to finish isn't that smart to me.

But I do check out us weekly and people.com every few days to stay to update.

I feel every morning there is a new famous couple calling it quits.  Nothing worse than looking at the front page of the newspaper and not seeing a picture of the newest murdered victim but of the most recent celeb couple throwing in the towel.

*before I go on, yes, I am not married, single to be exact. Nor do I have child but these are my thoughts*

First, there was Kim and Kris and the whole being married for 72 days. 72 days! I still can't rap my head around that.

Then Katy Perry and her crazy husband Russell announced that they were separating.  At least they lasted longer than 3 months, 14 to be exact. And the rumours that came along with it? Sad. Very sad. Bringing in her religious parents into the mess.

Now, it's all about Seal and Heidi.

Their statement makes me a little upset. Makes me have questions for them.

"While we have enjoyed seven very loving, loyal and happy years of marriage, after much soul-searching we have decided to separate.

"We have had the deepest respect for one another throughout our relationship and continue to love each other very much, but we have grown apart. This is an amicable process and protecting the well-being of our children remains our top priority, especially during this time of transition.
"We thank our family, friends, and fans for their kind words of support. And for our children's sake, we appreciate you respecting our privacy."
*from people.com

"But we have grown apart"

WTF?

That's not right. Couples are not supposed to grow apart, but grow together.

"we have enjoyed seven ...years"

enjoyed- sounds like the same enjoyment as a puppy. Oh, we have enjoyed seven years with our puppy but are giving it back to the pound.

I feel celebs just get married for the gown, for the money the magazines will pay. Not getting married to be with that person for the rest of their lives.

I feel celebs think getting a divorce is the only way to solve their problems. Because ya know, if you don't see them, it solves it. Wrong.

I know it drives my mother crazy when she hears about celebs splitting. Don't get her started on Kim and Kris. If you do, she will be going on and on...and on for at least 7.384 minutes.

I mean, my parents will be celebrating 30 years of marriage this year. So unheard of. Especially in Hollywood.

My life will be over if Tim and Faith split. Those two will be together forever!

So celebs? Listen up. Don't marry a person if you don't see it lasting till death. Remember the vow? Till death do us part? That.

weight loss update. and link up.

I know I talk a lot about my weight on here. It's something that I've always struggled with. I remember being in grade 9 and being so down about my weight, being so angry at other girls who were able to eat fast food for lunch and look amazing. Naturally, since my grandma works for weight watchers, I joined. Yup, I was in grade 9, 15 years old when I went on a "diet."

I call it a diet because I was looking for a fast-fix. I didn't put in the work at.all. Needless to say, on and off for the next 3 years  I failed. I tracked only the "healthy" foods, because if you don't track the unhealthy foods it didn't happen would forget to track dinner and yet couldn't figure out why I wasn't losing weight. I would sit in meetings and pout when other people got to their goal weight. I did have times where I gave up. Quit going. Then I would see myself in pictures or the mirror and would start tracking.

I dropped 8 pounds in those years. 8 little pounds. It was so embarrassing when the topic of  me and weight watchers came up in conversation. I hated when people asked how much I've lost and would dread saying 8 pounds (or less when I say gaining.) The looks of surprise hurt. I know people were thinking I was going to say a bigger number.

And I know what someone might say "8 pounds is 8 pounds." or "at least it's going down."

True. But 8 pounds over 3+ years? Absolutely horrible to me.

Over the summer I didn't lose anything. Maybe it was the pizza we ordered or my mindset of "oh hey I biked 4.5k to work so I can have 3 slices of pizza, a pop and chicken wings." I still weighed-in but wasn't happy with the results.

Aug 14,2011.

Then in october something happened. Call it what you will but I "saw the light." I was going to weight watchers meetings every saturday, tracking and doing "well." But the only time I would lose on the scale was when I wore a lighter pair of pants or didn't have a big dinner the night before. I was seriously thinking of quitting again. This time for good. I started thinking about school and how I couldn't take 3 hours out of my saturdays to get up, have breakfast, shower, do hair/make up, drive to weight watchers, actually weigh in, listen to the the meeting and go home.

As I was telling my mom my plan I remembered that Susan and Katie and great results doing weight watchers on-line. I looked into it and on October 29, 2011 I joined ww online.

So far I have lost 13.4 pounds! I have started running like crazy. Since November 23,2012 I have ran 103km (plus a few more from when I was training for my 5k in October) and not stopping.

I've also lost 3.5ish inches from my waist and hips. The jeans are getting loose and I have to wear a belt everytime I wear jeans. My family has noticed changes aswell. Like my uncle on Christmas eve. I was standing across the room and he yells out "hey sarah, you losing weight, thought so, your face looks smaller"

Favourite uncle right there.

I do have to say this. Yes, I do have weeks where I only lose 0.2. I do have weeks that I don't lose at all (happened over Christmas, which is fine!) I do have weeks were I gain 1.8.

It happens. Life happens. Again, it's a lifestyle change. Not a let's lose and gain it all back...and more.

LOOK! I have a waist :)
*this morning*

As we enter a new year, I don't want to stop with this life-style change. My one and only sibling is getting married in May and I want to look hot! It would be so nice for my SIL to set me up with one of her 37 first cousins!

My action plan:
  • continue with watchers online.
  • keep kicking runnings butt
  • run many races this year, starting with...
  • a 5k in Febuary, a 10k on april 22 and an another 10k on may 5
  • add in weight training once a week.

I do have a goal weight and goal measurements  When I get to my goal(s) I will share with y'all. *hopefully it's before may 12, 2012*

Scenes from the weekend-Christmas edition

Christmas this year was amazing! I didn't take loads of pictures as I was running around the entire city to see grandparents and enjoying my family all day. I did take tons of mental snaps!

Of course it wouldn't be Christmas without yummy cookies, many self-portraits, going to starbucks to get free coffee from my cousin who was working that night, tracking Santa on twitter, sappy texts and santa pj's.

Traditions were changed this year. Traditions that my little family has been doing since my brother was born were not done this year. And it's not Christmas without tears. Add in one cup of emotions,  1/2 cup of jealousy, a dash of not used to sharing Ryan with Danielle's side of family, stir in 4 hours of sleep and you get big, ugly tears. Maybe I'll share the story later. Or not.

I was so excited to give the gifts I made and bought for my family. I did good this year. Now, let's figure out how to make next year even better!

Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas!
I'm off for a run, try to burn off those chocolates!

Christmas Link up-Traditions

I'm linking up for the three week with Becky and Aly :)
This week is all about traditions!
~

I love traditions. Life wouldn't be the same without them...at least for me! This might sound like a Christmas re-cap but we've done the same thing every year, so ya, it's a tradition.

Every Christmas eve, my mom's side of the family goes to my aunts house for a great evening. The evening is filled with my loud family, playing pool with the cousins, watching a Christmas special or sports if my male cousins get the remote and of couse yummy finger food.

My grandma also makes everyone a stocking to open. I'm no lying when I say she starts January 2nd.  It's filled to the brim with our favourite soaps, razor blades, gift cards to timmy hoes (Tim Hortons) or starbucks for me!

I seriously love Christmas eve! I love it because for the evening it's all about family, which is the reason for Christmas.
~
Christmas morning though is hands down my favourite part of the whole Christmas memories.

Of course, I wake up at 7:30 and wait...and wait...and wait for my brother and my parents to wake up. Who sleeps in on Christmas?! Never understood that!

While my mom makes our egg McMuffins with grapefruit and coffee we open our own stockings that mama Hannon puts together.

I have no clue how or why my mom makes egg McMuffins on Christmas morning! I'm not complaining, I love it!

After breakfast I rush everyone downstairs to see what Santa left. Here we spend time slowly opening our presents and enjoying our time as the 4 5 of us.

After showers and makeup, we head to my dad's parents nursing home to give them their presents and spend time with them.

Now it's around 1pm and we head down to my mom's parents to open gifts there and later have Christmas dinner.

We get home around 9pm and head to bed. It's such a busy day but I wouldn't have anyway else.

5 days left! and I haven't started wrapping..opps!

The day we got our tree

Yesterday, my mom and dad and of course me, went to a Christmas Tree Farm to buy our tree. Karen went last weekend and loved it!

Not only was there 10457 trees, but the family that owns it (how cute is that?!) has a petting zoo at the back. My mom and I had a great time talking to the billy goats and bunnies.

It was so cold at the farm, even though we were only 45 minutes north of Toronto. The things we do for our trees.

As I'm typing this, the tree is being put up down in the basement :)

Great picture of my parents and I right?!

Goats
When we were done, we took a little drive to Unionville. The cutest, littlest town ever! We enjoyed sipping on our starbucks drinks and wandering into cute little stores along their "downtown" (I put that in quotes, because I don't feel like I'm downtown. Nothing compares to Toronto's downtown.

Of course we took these pictures!

Hi dad!

love this fam picture.

Christmas Link up: Wish List

I'm linking up with Becky today for Show me Christmas.

Each Tuesday there will be a new Christmas topic to write about!

December 6th: Wish List
December 13: Decorations
December 20: Traditions
December 27: What we got, memories, news etc :)
~

Usually, in past years I have no problem coming up with what I would like for Christmas. This year? Hardest time ever! After weeks of thinking what I would love to receive I finally came up with my list.

Already #4 has been given. My brother and SIL are spending Christmas day/eve AND Christmas day with my family.  No leaving on Christmas eve night to go to Danielle's house to see her family on Christmas. This totally warms my heart and makes me love her even more.

Every year my dad says he just wants his family together for Christmas. It's all he wants. My mom and I joke that his "gift" is the easiest to "get". As I got thinking, he's right. There is nothing more important than spending time with family on Christmas.

happy Tuesday friends!

In other news: my psych exam yesterday went well. I studied my butt off this past weekend. Some of the questions came easy to me,  others I had to guess and others I really had to think about. Now? I am done school till January 9th :)

What I'm loving and Oh, how Pinteresting

Has it really been a week and a half since my last post?! Sorry for the week hiatus.

Last week at school was my "week of hell." I had two papers due and 3 tests! I didn't have time to blog and even if I did i know you guys don't want to hear me complain about lack of time and such. Thankfully I made it through :) I'm now done classes (last one was yesterday) and I am working on my last assignment due tomorrow by 4pm, an exam monday at noon then I. am. DONE! So excited to sleep in, blog!, watch this season of the biggest loser, enjoy my aunts dog that we are watching this coming week and bake :)

Here is what I am LOVING today!
~I am loving my new SIL to be. She did the sweetest thing. Let me explain.

Usually for Christmas, Ryan and Danielle come down and join my mom's side of the family for Christmas eve. Then they either go back to their house that night or come to my house and sleep over, have homemade egg McMuffins and open presents between us four  five and then leave.

Ryan has missed Christmas dinner at my Grandma's the last 2 years because they have to see Danielle's side of the family. It sucks but we understand. Oh the joys of becoming one.

This weekend my mom asked Ryan what was going on for Chrismas. Are they sleeping over? Going back Christmas eve? Or what!

Ryan told my mom that Danielle said that them two would be spending Christmas eve AND Christmas morning/day with us! She said that since she gets to see her family (Ry and her live 4 minutes away from her parents house) that they see her family all the time. It's only fair.

My mom/dad and me are completely overjoyed at her thoughtfulness. We realize that this won't happen every year but we will enjoy it.

~I am loving that I am done classes :)

~I am loving running :) I downloaded the Nike Plus app and have logged 16.83k since last wednesday!

What are you loving today?

Here are the funny finds I found this week.
